Lots of organisations who look to modernise their way of working by moving to the Cloud often ask us how secure the Cloud is.
We’re always really pleased to be asked this question because cyber security should always be high on your list of priorities. It’s something that you never think will happen to you but if you’re unlucky enough to experience it, it can have dire consequences. Our advise is to assume that at some point you will be a victim of cyber crime and to work your way back from there. This means looking at all layers of security from anti virus to password best practices; the list of measures you can take is varied and a multiple approach is often needed.
So, how secure is the Cloud? The honest answer is that it’s not 100% secure as nothing ever is over the internet. But the good news is that the Cloud is likely to be more secure than a traditional server on your premises as Microsoft will implement stronger and more resilient security measures to protect your data than you would probably use yourself. Data is scrambled in the Cloud to allow it to be encrypted which makes it more difficult for hackers to access. By comparison, data on a traditional server is saved as it comes and it’s up to your anti virus, firewall and network security to stop it being accessed. These are still features that you would use in the Cloud but the Cloud gives you that added layer of encryption.
The most common way that hackers gain access to your data is by human error and this should be viewed as your strongest form of defence. Did you get a dodge looking email from your colleague? Did it read not quite right? Then it probably isn’t. Phishing emails commonly give hackers a way into your data and unfortunately their sophisticated scams can fool the savvy.
