Roadworks power blunder interrupts our recovery plan video

Roadwork contractors study the aftermath of their power cable blunder at the Cedars industrial estate

Whilst we were midway through recording customer videos on the importance of maintaining strong incident recovery plans, we were forced to implement our own.

As the cameras were rolling inside Hubtel IT, contractors digging up the road outside – ironically, to lay fibre optic cabling -accidently cut through the mains power supply to not just our building, but the entire industrial estate.

While Neil Bayliss, chief executive of Hubtel IT, was midway through outlining why all businesses should have robust cyber security measures and recovery plans, the lights and screens went off.

Within minutes the cause of the power outage had been confirmed and all our staff were calmly filing out of the building with instructions to resume work from home for the rest of the day.

Neil said: “Unfortunately, these things do happen. Some external contractors working on the industrial state have drilled through a power cable.

“The whole power to the site went down, but we’ve got a robust recovery plan, which means we send our staff home to work from home in the event of a total power outage.”

Hubtel operates a hybrid-working pattern which means it always has at least two members of staff working from a different location to ensure business continuity.

Neil added: “Our staff can continue doing their jobs, they can continue supporting our clients. Nothing stops when you’ve got a good disaster recovery plan in place. Our customers need supporting. Our problems aren’t their problems. So, we continue.”
